一九四九年的上海正是多事之秋，靳康年(邓浩光)与董敏(翁虹)邂逅而坠入爱河，但几经波折才再度重逢，誓言决不分离。可惜康不久被对他有心病的靳子轩(陈锦鸿)迫害，被屈入狱。当康获释时，康、敏仿似隔世重逢。一次难得机会，敏可到美国深造音乐，康为了不想拖累敏，嘱敏先往美国等之，而自己却赴外地从军。不久敏获悉事实，便回国找康，惜不果。数年后，康突然出现，并被卷入文化大革命浪潮中，遂掀起一场激烈的恩怨情仇。
